Looking after your skin can be hard enough to achieve at the best of times, but during pregnancy, your body experiences a lot of changes. So how do you keep up? French skincare experts Caudalie have created a handy guide to make sure you keep glowing throughout your pregnancy.

For many women, a healthy “pregnancy glow” is one of the physiological changes to look forward to while expecting. Yet your skin (like the rest of your body) goes through a lot during pregnancy. So it’s worth investing in some effective and natural skincare.

Differences in the skin’s appearance during pregnancy are mostly due to fluctuating hormone levels.  For many women, skin can become congested, sensitive, flaky and irritated in a way it has never been before.  One skin condition that affects around 75% of pregnant women in the UK is Chloasma, commonly known as “Pregnancy Mask”.

Pregnancy mask is hyperpigmentation. It appears as dark patches on the skin, most often on the forehead, cheeks, mouth and neck. These dark patches appear due to a hormone imbalance whereby the skin produces extra melanin which is your tanning pigment. Melanin is normally only stimulated when the body is exposed to sunlight. The good news is that for many women these changes disappear shortly after giving birth when their hormones return to normal. However, for some, areas of pregnancy mask can be permanent or can reoccur when triggered by sunlight.

Pregnancy skincare: What should I use to look after my skin?

The most important thing to do in order to prevent Melasma is to use a high factor sunscreen. Increased exposure to the sun could darken areas of hyperpigmentation further.  It is also worth investing in some natural skincare to lighten the appearance of darker patches and even skin tone. One of the best known natural ingredients to work on hyperpigmentation is Viniferine.  Viniferine is derived from grape stem sap and works to reduce the appearance of pregnancy mask.  In the old days, grapevine sap was used by young women working on the vineyards. Applied to their face and hands, it reduces the dark spots caused by the sun and clarifies their complexion.

Caudalie‘s Vinoperfect Radiance Serum contains Viniferine at its highest concentration. It’s proven to change the behaviour of the tanning pigment, melanin in the skin.  With continual use the appearance of a pregnancy mask, dark patches, pigmentation and scarring can be lightened, brightened and skin will appear more even. VinoPerfect Radiance Serum is a light, moisturising and oil-free serum. Apply it every day under a moisturiser and SPF.

  • Stick to natural skincare brands that use natural ingredients that will not irritate the skin or heighten sensitivity.
  • Use products high in Viniferine such as Caudalie’s Vinoperfect Radiance Serum throughout your pregnancy to even skin tone and reduce the appearance of dark patches.
  • Wear SPF 50 when exposed to the sun to avoid further darkening and sensitivity caused by the sun.
  • Wear a sun hat to protect your skin from the sun.

What else can I do to look after my skin during pregnancy?

Add a water spray to your beauty regime

A water spray is ideal for a quick hydration boost and for soothing sensitive skin during pregnancy. A water spray will also come in handy to cool and refresh the skin during labour. Try Caudalie’s 100% natural grape water.

Enjoy a body massage to ease tension

Areas of the body such as the legs and feet can become heavy and swollen during pregnancy, so a massage will help to aid drainage. Massage also helps to lower your heart rate which helps both you and your baby to relax.

Invest in a luxurious body oil

It is advisable to avoid essential oils while pregnant, but a plant-based, multi-purpose oil is a great way to nourish your hair, face, fingernails and body when time is of the essence during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Caudalie’s Divine Oil is a blend of nourishing plant oils and organic, fair trade Shea butter with a beautiful rose and cedar scent that is great for use on stretch marks.

Some great tips from Caudalie, there. Now you can be sure you’ll be looking as healthy as you feel.
